Task 1 Essay draft

For this Essay I’ll be demonstrating and assessing the development and principles of editing techniques. For my first assessment I have chosen a music video by J Cole called apparently

J. Cole’s music video is set in several different places, with the settings you can see it’s more of a cinematic set as there’s videos showing his past with his mother and his childhood memories. It’s also dark when showing the videos behind J Cole so as J Cole is singing he isn’t as visible. In camera editing was done here as it’s used to manipulate light so all we see is the shape of how he looks, you get some shed of light to see J Cole when the video brightens up. There’s a wide range of camera movement in the music video as it starts off with a close up on j Cole then coming to a mid-shot but as the music video progresses it starts to capture J Cole’s movement in a wide shot then comes in again with a mid-shot then the camera starts to move around J Cole but as it’s done it still focuses on his close up to capture the emotion. Camera angles in the music video are more or less direct when focusing on J Cole from a wide shot, mid shot or a close up especially when getting the movement of J Cole. The only effects is the lights in the video that change different colour as J Cole is moving. The representation for the music video was to show a heartfelt J Cole expressing his feelings about his mother to the audience. The message to the audience was to let know people know that they shouldn’t lose sight of what life is and what people close to them mean. The narrative structure of the music video is opened by J Cole expressing his feelings and ends with an electric guitar in motion play strings. The purpose of the J Cole music video is to promote and entertain. The target audience is for hip hop lovers between 13- 45

The song is about how he left his mum to deal with the problem she faced when J Cole was out in New York chasing women and a record deal and also apologising not only to his mum but his girl as well and appreciating what his mother has done for him. In the music video there isn’t many transitions if any at all that would normally be used but they use the light as it likes to get dark with in the setting to cut to different scenes, mainly the in the music video they just cut to different scenes within the music video. The song used for the music video isn’t a high pace high tempo song but it has soft but hard impact especially when it other instrumentals are being used and defiantly when it comes to the chorus where it’s at its loudest but the levels of the song stay consistent even though it has it’s moment when it gets quiet which usually show J Cole reminiscing and bringing emotion to the audience with the song then brings in the instruments and levels come back to a norm as it hits the chorus. Obviously as it’s a music video the song has to be clear and direct especially with the message the song is trying to give to the audiences so the fidelity/clarity of song is important in terms of the music video which was professionally made and sonically sounded great. The Rhythm in the music video is fluid so cuts to well-structured scenes perfectly.

This is an example of how light was manipulated to only see J Cole’s shape. The background the video acts as light for J Cole.

  1. Pass.

    - You've only used one example here Tim. You need to use another two media examples to vary your analysis
    - Use the brief to make sure you've covered every bit of terminology that task 1 asks for (highlight them/make them bold in your essay to make it easy to see!)
    - You need to reference some academic sources that discuss some of the editing techniques, e.g. find an article online that talks about how the 180 rule can be used, etc
    - Use more screenshots/images to illustrate it
